As spring approaches, those who suffer from allergies often feel miserable when plants expel pollen into the air. While you can’t always escape pollen when outside, these five tips on how to prepare your home during allergy season will provide some relief while inside.
Add an air purifier
Purifiers trap tiny particulates, including pollens, that trigger allergic reactions. Inside air gets sucked into the purifier where it goes through multiple filters that remove the harmful pathogens. Keeping the filters clean is essential to keeping your air purifier running in optimal condition.
Keep doors and windows closed
While you want to open up to let fresh air in, you’ll also let pollen inside. It’s better to run the air conditioner to keep the house cool. Be sure to check that there are no leaks around the windows and doors, and if you find leaks, have them sealed.
Keep the HVAC system maintained
A clean HVAC system, especially the air filters and ducting, helps keep pollen from entering your home as well as allows it to run efficiently. Have the system maintained in the spring before you turn it on, and clean the air filters on a regular basis.
Spring clean your home
Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to get rid of contaminants that trigger allergies. If you are the one cleaning and have allergies, wear a NIOSH 95 dust mask or hire someone to deep clean for you.
Keep the garden area trimmed
Trim back flowers and grasses that produce allergy-inducing pollen. Or, consider creating an allergy-free garden with plants that don’t produce as much or any pollen.
Follow these tips to help allergy-proof your home so that you or anyone in your household who suffers from allergies can enjoy the spring without feeling miserable.
